Chapter 13 - That was my brother, and that was 10 years ago
In which I continue with the penultimate chapter of Part II - A Game of Chess in my memoir "My Own Private Waste Land"
13 – That was my brother, and that was 10 years ago
1979. My brother and sisters went to Granada High, but it had been a while since a Hornbrook walked those halls. They were 10, 9, and 7 years older than me.
On my first day of high school, before the first bell, my friends and I played
H-O-R-S-E on the asphalt against the beat-up backboards with chain nets that rattled with each swish.
Dr. Stock, the P.E. teacher, approached and put his arm around my waist.
“Hello, Lynn. Are you going out for basketball again this year?”
I looked directly at this man I had never met.
“Lynn is my brother, and that was 10 years ago. I’m Lee. I don’t play basketball. I like baseball.”
Dr. Stock withdrew his arm and shook his head, unable to fathom the flash of a decade before his eyes, those intrusive thoughts of mortality.
Who is that jump-shooting always beside me?
