Fascinating. It was good to get your perspective and experiences on writing memoir. It's something I've began to work on, so I found this article useful.

Thanks, Cindy! I'm glad you found it useful. I'd love to know more about your own memoir writing efforts.

My memoir was 4 years in the making. Now I'm in the querying process. This newsletter is all about making my memoir as well as about memoir theory as well as all the topics associated with my memoir. I'm pulling together a memoir writing group, if you'd like to be kept in the loop.

I wanted to tell you that I don't know how people contact each other privately on Substack. There is no DM feature. So, keep me in the loop however works best for you. I do know they introduced a chat feature this month but only in mobile applications. And, unbelievably, I don't use a smartphone. (Don't ask, long story behind it.) After going on this digital diet for a year, I can't bear going back to using one. Life is so much better now. Meaning I won't have access to chat until Substack eventually sets it up for web as well. lol

Oh.. I do have a phone but most of the day wish I didn't. So I'm lagging behind on chat. You can reach me at lee_hornbrook@yahoo.com. If you write to me there, I'll have your email address to keep you in the loop. Until then, (said like Bogart), we'll always have Substack.

Hi Lee,

Just letting you know I went ahead and sent you an email to your yahoo account so that you'd have my email address. Please let me know if you didn't get the email.

Thanks!

My process of writing my memoir is equivalent to what a hoarder's house looks like. Totally chaos with no organization but plenty of material. So, for the past few years, I've been collecting things from my mind and memory. I suspect one of the biggest things holding me back is insulting or hurting any of my huge family. This is even though I will be super careful not to do this. I'm the baby of seven. Of those seven, five are girls. That is why I became a tomboy early in life. My older sisters were always full of too much drama. lol

Memoir writing group? Yes. I would definitely be interested in learning what you end up doing with that.

Great! I looked into making an in-person memoir group on MeetUp today. I also want to offer a virtual memoir group. I want to consider different formats, make it so that participants are truly getting something from it. I may teach it like a class - half inquiry into memoir craft and half writing workshop. Critiques can be by the group or by me or both. There are some great memoir craft books that talk directly about what do about writing about family that's alive - and whether to insult them or not, and how to proceed without letting family hold you back. It's all so much fun!
